Another long struggle opened, this time between Musa Molloh and Fodi Kabbah.
The 1889 treaties signed at Kansala between the British Governor and the rulers of sixteen Jola towns and of Bintang and central Kiang, all of whom were seeking British protection against the formidable Fodi Kabbah.
In 1892 Fodi Kabba was defeated; in 1894 a protectorate was formally declared over the kingdoms within the newly extended boundaries of the Gambia, and the slave trade (although not slavery itself) made illegal within these kingdoms.
