A long succession of dictators were left to their own devices, until World War II. Then General [Jorge] Ubico's political sympathies with Mussolini and Hitler proved an embarassment. In July 1944, the rising urban middle classes, notably the teachers, took to the streets to protest against Ubico's policies and forced his resignation. He appointed another general, Federico Pnce, to succeed him.
