Military Coup in Guatemala 1944

In October, a coup led by two junior officers -- Major Francisco Arana and Captain Jacobo Arbenz Guzman -- forced [General Federico] Ponce to resign. About 100 people were killed in the coup. Arana and Arbenze called Guatemala's first free election, which was won with a majority of 85 per cent by the prominent writer and teacher Dr Juan Jose Arevalo Bermejo, who had lived in exile in Mexico for 14 years. His supporters had to send him the fare before he could return.
