Guatemalan president General Miguel Ydigoras Fuentes had become deeply unpopular, and the Americans feared that he lacked the stamina to fight the Communists. In the summer of 1963, former president Juan Jose Arevalo Bermejo reappeared and announced his candidacy in the elections which were then due. The army decided Ydigoras must go and, after consultation with Washington, arranged a coup on March 29. Ydigoras was replaced by the minister of defence, Enrique Peralta Azurdia. Apologists for John F. Kennedy deny that the president approved the coup.
